Lyceum Capital built Asquith Schools into the largest independent owner and operator of day preparatory schools in the UK. It was sold to Englefield Capital in November 2004.
The company was bought in 2001, when it consisted of only nine schools, educating around 2,500 pupils aged between 3 and 16 years. The schools' sector was highly fragmented. There was a clear opportunity to build a larger group via acquisitions.
The business was repositioned, with substantial investment in new IT and MIS systems, and in marketing, business development and infrastructure.
By mid-2004, Asquith had acquired a further ten schools including: Downsend and the leading London schools group, North Bridge House. By 2004 the number of pupils at Asquith Schools had increased to 4,300, with staff members doubling to over 620.
